St Georges Day takes place on the 23rd of April each year. The date commemorates the anniversary of St Georges’s death which happened in 303 AD.
St George is famous for slaying a Dragon who was being fed a sheep a day by terrified villagers.
When the sheep ran out, they had to start feeding the Dragon a child a day to satisfy its hunger.
Children were chosen by a lottery until, one day, the King’s daughter was chosen.
George arrived in the village and offered to slay the Dragon, which he did by stabbing his sword into a soft patch of skin under the Dragon’s arm.
A colossal feat was held in st Georges’s honour, and he is still celebrated to this day.
