Why Are Large Mugs Ceramic?

It’s true that most mugs are ceramic, mugs are also made out of glass and various metals. Ceramic mugs are made from one of four clay mixes.

  • Bone China
  • Earthenware
  • Porcelain
  • Stoneware

Each one has its advantages and disadvantages over each other, but every ceramic has one major advantage over glass.

What is this advantage?

In short, ceramic retains heat better than glass and will keep hot drinks hotter for longer. Ceramic is more absorptive than glass and absorbs the heat from the hot liquid the mug then acts as insulation keeping the drink warm. Heat loss from ceramic is around 11% less than from glass.

Here are other advantages ceramic has over glass

  • Ceramic is lighter than glass which means cheaper shipping costs
  • Ceramic is easier to make into mugs than glass
  • Ceramic is easier to print on than glass

So now you know why most Mugs are ceramic.
